Trident Health to Build New Emergency Department Near Tanger Outlets

Last updated 6 months ago

Trident Health has announced plans to construct a new 24/7 free-standing emergency department (ED) at the corner of International Blvd. and Emmett Davis Jr. Ave. A groundbreaking will be held Thursday, February 13 at noon at the project site, which is located behind the Bonefish Grill restaurant. Trident Health representatives, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey, local elected officials and healthcare partners will attend. The site is located near the Tanger Outlets at the corner of International Blvd. and Emmett Davis Jr. Ave. Unlike urgent care centers, “Centre Pointe Emergency” will be open 24/7/365 and will be staffed by board certified Emergency Medicine physicians.

Centre Pointe Emergency will accept walk-in patients as well as patients who arrive via ambulance service. “We’re taking the nationally recognized quality care we provide at today’s Trident facilities and making it more convenient and accessible for the Charleston metropolitan area,” said Todd Gallati, President and CEO of Trident Health. The emergency department will provide diagnostic modalities such as CT/X-ray and lab. A dedicated ambulance bay and drop off area will be onsite for patients being transported by EMS.

“Trident Health’s new emergency center is ideally located to serve families and businesses in North Charleston and surrounding communities.  The facility positions us to accommodate future growth with quality emergency healthcare around the Coliseum Complex and Centre Pointe developments,” said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey.

The 12,300 square foot facility will feature 12 private patient-care rooms. Besides having the 24/7 onsite presence of board certified Emergency Medicine trained physicians, there will be 18 different specialists, ranging from neurology, cardiology, surgery, and others that the ER physician can call as back up as needed. This crucial aspect, and the fact that it will be open continuously and will accept EMS transports, distinguishes free-standing emergency rooms from urgent care centers. Gallati adds, “It’s important for a large and diverse community like Charleston to provide various levels of emergency and urgent care.”

The total project cost is just under 10 million dollars; Trident Construction will be overseeing the project, which should be complete in late 2014. "A freestanding emergency department is an excellent way to provide continuous coverage in a very convenient setting. We will be able to diagnose and treat almost any type of patient quickly and efficiently," said Preston Wendell, MD, Director of Emergency Services at Summerville Medical Center.

Trident Health is an HCA hospital system comprised of two acute care hospitals – Trident Medical Center and Summerville Medical Center – as well as Moncks Corner Medical Center.
